Utility and Electrical Substations

KPS Global insulated panel systems are designed to protect critical utility equipment from external conditions, minimizing downtime and equipment maintenance. KPS Global offers custom utility enclosures to safely enclose components.

There are many vital electrical components in these enclosures that need to be temperature controlled to provide longevity and ensure effectiveness of the product. Our panels play an essential role with protecting utility and electrical enclosure components.

Electrical Substations

Electrical substations are systems that can transmit electricity at different voltages safely and effectively. KPS Global panels are used to protect sensitive equipment at electrical substations. Electrical substation panels by KPS Global are constructed with a polyurethane insulated cam-lock panel.

Our panels for electrical substations are manufactured with a 3 1/2” panel thickness for walls with an R-Value of 24, equivalent to R-6.80 per inch of urethane foam. The insulated ceiling panels are 5” thick to create the most insulation. Our insulated panels for electrical substations can be constructed to one-hour fire resistance however the customer must obtain approval from the permitting agency before fabrication.

Utility
Enclosures

KPS Global manufactures insulated panels for utility enclosures to protect a variety of equipment inside the enclosures from the environment. Our utility enclosure insulated panels provide an R-Value of 6.80 per inch, with thicknesses of 5”. Our insulated panels for utility enclosures are constructed to one hour-fire resistance however the customer must obtain approval from the permitting agency before fabrication.

Shipping And
Installation Options

KPS Global works with integrators to offer both skid and slab mounted enclosures for shipping and installation. Each shipping method offers their own benefits and should be taken into consideration based on project specifications. These considerations include the final location as this may affect seismic and environmental certifications.

Skid Mounted

Dealers and integrators provide skid mounted electrical and utility enclosures manufactured with KPS Global insulated panels. Skid-mounted enclosures are assembled within the confines of the integrator’s shop and are anchored to the skid on the outside allowing panels to connect seamlessly. Once construction of the enclosure is complete it is then shipped to the final location as a complete unit. Skid mounted utility and electrical substations are a great choice for projects that require complete control as site conditions, timing and logistics are stable.

Slab Mounted

Slab on grade, mounted electrical and utility substations are available through KPS Global integrators and shipped palletized flat with assembly taking place at the final location. Mounting these enclosures on a concrete slab provides durability, strength and supports heavy loads. Due to harsh climates and severe weather conditions slab mounting becomes especially useful to keep the slab positioned correctly. One consideration that should be made with slab mounted enclosures is the inability to relocate due to the nature of the permanent installation.

It should be noted that how the substation is viewed by the destination municipality can depend on whether the substation is shipped in pieces (slab mount) or as an assembled unit (skid mount) and may require additional labeling or certifications.

Roofing Options For Electrical And Utility Enclosures

Similar to other types of equipment enclosures, KPS Global offers two roof types for utility and electrical enclosures.

Membrane Roofs

KPS Global provides membrane roofs that are manufactured with rubber material called ethylene propylene diene monomer, also known as EPDM membrane roofs or Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). Membrane roofing prevents the build-up of frozen precipitation from harsh weather conditions. Glue and termination bars can be used to install a membrane roof. Membrane roofs are the most cost-efficient option of the roofing offered on our enclosures.

Standing Seam Metal Roofs

KPS Global also offers standing seam metal roofing that is manufactured using a 22-gauge aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel with interlocking ribs at 16” on center. The metal roof configuration uses a seam to divert snow and precipitation. The metal roofing is locked together and fastened to the sheathing undercarriage with clips. Standing seam roofs can be used with sloped walls. Standing seam roofs are used for the fortitude and durability that the metal provides. This will lead to less maintenance over time.

UTILITY AND ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION PANEL FINISHES

KPS Global recommends one of two exterior finishes that are aluminum-zinc alloy coated for utility and substation enclosures.

  • Tan Stucco Embossed 22 gauge
  • White Stucco Embossed 22 gauge

Exterior metal finishes are also available with a corrugated mesa profile which strengthens the panels and allows them to span farther without additional structural support. Compared to other exterior metal panel finishes, the mesa profile protects better against harsh environmental conditions.

For interior finishes, White Stucco Embossed 26 gauge is recommended.

Insulated panel systems by KPS Global allow versatility across multiple applications.  Due to the critical equipment located inside of these enclosures, our insulated panels protect and provide temperature-controlled environments within the units.
