KPS Global makes three different types of battens!

When the seams of a walk-in freezer or cooler begin to fail, performance, efficiency and product safety are placed at risk. A shortened unit lifespan and higher operating costs are common outcomes. Batten Strips provide a practical solution to help address these risks. As a proven, cost-efficient method to reinsulate and reseal panel seams, Batten Strips extend the life of a walk-in without the full expense of an entire box replacement. With the right types of Batten Strips in place, stores can restore integrity and protect their investment with confidence.

If you are preparing to reseal the joints on your walk-in freezer, it is important to understand the different types of Batten Strips available and how each one supports long term performance. There are several types of Batten Strips available, each designed to support long term performance in specific areas of your walk-in.

Types of Battens

Three different Batten Strip variations are available for walk-ins. These include wall/ceiling, interior corner and base Batten Strips. The correct Batten Strip depends on where the joint damage is located within the walk in.

  • Base Batten Strips are installed where the floor meets the wall.
  • Interior corner Batten Strips measure 3 inches by 3 inches and are designed for seams that intersect at a 90 degree corner.
  • Wall and ceiling Batten Strips are 5 inches wide and are used along interior or exterior wall and ceiling seams.
Batten strips have three types of batten strips
Each Batten Strip is constructed with EPS foam and finished with 26 gauge metal in either a natural or white coating. Batten Strips are manufactured in 10 foot lengths and can be field cut to fit the specific application. Batten Strips come in kits with everything needing included for install: metal, foam, butyl, tape, screws and silicon.

When to Use Batten Strips

Batten Strips should be used when there is icing in joints, panel swelling or similar damage. These joints can be reinsulated by placing Batten Strips over the joints in the interior or exterior of the box. Batten Strips prevent warm air from getting inside the box. When you begin to see issues with the panel joints, the effectiveness of the walk-in has already started to decrease. Having a high functioning walk-in is critical for store operations. Replacing the entire walk-in is a large investment. By using Batten Strips, the life of your current walk-in can be prolonged. Batten Strips can be ordered and installed quickly to minimize disruption to operations.

For Batten Strip installations on walk in freezers, the box must be shut down 48 to 72 hours prior to installation.

When Not to Use Batten Strips

Batten Strips will not fix issues that are occurring with your refrigeration. Batten Strips are designed specifically to address warm air infiltration at panel seams. Issues such as icing on the floor or across panel surfaces typically indicate a separate concern, unless the source of the problem originates at the seams.

Why Batten Strips

Damaged panel seams can cause decreased performance, poor energy use and ultimately a shortened walk-in life. This leads to wasted energy and higher costs of operating the unit. This may require a purchase to replace the walk-in before expected. Batten Strips help reinsulate the seam with EPS foam and can extend the life of the walk-in by three to five years, providing cost-savings and protecting the initial investment. By covering the joints, Batten Strips slow the effects of wear and prevent further damage from occurring.
