walk-in doors

KPS Global® manufactures walk-in doors for new walk-in coolers and freezers and builds made-to-order replacement walk-in doors in any of our manufacturing locations. Walk-in man doors come in two styles for new coolers and freezers: inset and flush mount. Replacement doors, that fit any brand of walk-in on the market, ship as one of three kit options matched to the condition of your door opening. Every door ships with the hardware, gaskets, wiring and sweeps needed to install it.

The door is the hardest working part of any walk-in. It opens and closes hundreds of times a day, takes hits from carts, hand trucks and pallet jacks and is the main path for warm air to infiltrate a cold space. A door that sags, leaks or will not latch, costs you money through lost energy expenses. That is why we build our doors to the same standard as our insulated panels, and why choosing the right door type up front matters as much as choosing the right walk-in.

Walk-In Doors for New Walk-in Coolers and Freezers

Our cold storage walk-in doors are engineered and manufactured alongside the insulated panels around them, so the door and walls perform as one efficient system. A walk-in is only as efficient as its weakest point, and the door is usually it. That matters for compliance too: per the Department of Energy (DOE), cooler and freezer doors must have an R-Value equal to the walls they sit in. We manufacture two door styles, inset and flush mount.

Standard Inset Walk-In Door

The standard inset externally overlaps the door section one inch at the top and both sides of the walk-in, framed by the surrounding panels. It is our everyday workhorse for walk-in coolers and freezers in convenience stores, grocery stores, restaurants and foodservice kitchens. Because each walk-in is custom-built, the door is sized and positioned to fit your layout rather than a nominal opening.

Inset Door with Buck and Inside Facer

This replacement door style allows us to fit a new door on walk-ins from most manufacturers, so you can replace just the door without replacing the walk-in. The door sits within the existing wall opening and is framed by a buck and an inside facer.

The buck is a structural frame that lines the opening. It aligns the panel edges, reinforces the existing opening and gives the hinges, closer and latch a solid place to anchor. The inside facer trims and protects the interior edge of the opening for a clean, finished look inside the walk-in.

Flush Mount Vs. Inset Walk-In Doors

We also manufacture flush mount doors. A flush mount door sits nearly flush with the surrounding panel surface for a clean, low-profile look, and it is the standard door on our quick-ship walk-ins at 3′ x 6’6″. A flush mount door uses a stepped design with a standard 1-5/8″ offset between the door surface and the frame. Replacement hinges and latches come in flush mount and offset versions, so measure the offset from the door surface to the frame before ordering replacement hardware. Our detailed door drawings and specifications for both styles are available on our Product Details page, along with optional ramps for easier loading when floors are preset.

Expert Tip Image

A stepped design means the door edge is built at two levels, with the outer face overlapping the frame to create a tighter seal.

What Comes on a KPS Global Manufactured Door

Whether it is part of a new walk-in or a replacement, each door we build comes outfitted with the components it needs to seal, operate and stay safe:

  • Hinges and a hydraulic door closer
  • Latch and handle with an inside safety release
  • Gasket and door sweep for a tight seal
  • Threshold and kickplate upon customer’s request
  • Vent and thermometer upon customer’s request
  • 3-way light switch with pilot light upon customer’s request

Doors are available in a variety of finishes, including natural metal, to match the rest of your walk-in. Freezer doors also include heater wire, which helps keep the door from freezing shut.

Additional Doors we Design Into your Walk-In

While we do not manufacture glass or traffic doors, but we regularly design them into the walk-ins we build so the whole system works together:

  • Glass display doors for beverage coolers, beer caves and floral coolers, with options such as anti-fog glass or specific humidity controls
  • Traffic doors for fast, two-way movement through openings that still need a barrier
  • High-speed rollup doors for busy back-of-house and loading areas
  • Rollup and sliding doors for refrigerated warehouses

Planning these doors at the design stage lets us place structural support correctly and keep your project to one partner and one point of contact, explore our components.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Our replacement walk-in doors are custom-built to fit any brand of walk-in on the market. Our door kits overlap the panels of your existing walk-in to ensure a proper fit and seal.

The inset door overlaps and sits in inch around the top and sides. The inset door with buck and inside facer adds a reinforcing buck around the opening and a facer on the interior side, giving the opening more protection in high-traffic walk-ins.

If your opening is in good shape, the outside face frame kit adds stability and exterior protection. If the opening takes abuse on both sides, choose the outside and inside face frame kit. For new door openings or openings with structural concerns, choose the full retrofit kit. Our parts team can help you decide.
